What Is America’s Role In The World? How Far Should We Go?

I like many Americans am questioning Obama’s decision to send troops to Haiti. I feel awful for the people in Haiti and hope only the best for them. But we are fighting in two wars right now, we have an economy still in shambles, people are losing jobs left and right, and the President is fully focused on health care. So is it America’s job to help every nation around the world? Now don’t get me wrong, it is America’s job to make sure that any American’s in Haiti get out safe, we have a responsibility to our citizens to get them out. But should we be sending troops to help that nation when we have so many other problems we need to focus on?
Many of these soldiers and Marines have been in Iraq or Afghanistan or both and now they are being sent to help dig through the ruble. It’s on thing to send relief organizations like the Red Cross and Coast Guard ships. But President Obama is sending around 2,000 Marines, parts of the 82nd Airborne and other military units to help in the relief effort. Our military is as stretched as they’ve ever been. They are fighting a war on terrorism, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Like I said, I don’t want to sounds like a harsh American who doesn’t care about the pain and suffering of others. But I don’t think its right that our soldiers and Marines should have to “fight” on another front, even if that other front is a humanitarian front. I am all for sending money, supplies, aid workers from private organizations, etc. But I just don’t think our soldiers and Marines should have to face another deployment, no matter how short it may be.
I also want to say my thoughts a prayers are with all the victims of the tragic earthquake that hit Haiti, I hope that they will be able to rebuild, and put their lives back together very soon.

What you say is true, but it is like the Bible story of the widows mite. Your contribution counts most when you don’t have much to give.
In this case there is no other organization that can do some of the most needed things. Like taking over their air traffic control system – that is a big deal. Like the hospital ship and aircraft carrier just off shore. Like field hospitals. Like a large peace keeping force ready to go now. Our military has awesome capabilities that most people don’t even know about.
I strongly agree that we have stretched the troops way too thin, especially combat units like the 82th. If we had spent some of the stimulus/bailout, etc. on defense it would be easier. I like your line of thought but believe we have to do this one. It just does need to go too far. BTW O’Reilly had a memo yesterday or Wed. with some of the same ideas as yours. It worth a quick watch.
